SUMMARY:Seth McMeans Lecture Series: James Bevill
DESCRIPTION:Well-known Texas historian James Bevill is the second speaker of the Seth McMeans Lecture Series. He is best known for his award-winning book The Paper Republic\, but the subject of his talk at noon on Monday\, March 28th is found on the opposite side of the world. Bevill's new book is titled Blackboards and Bomb Shelters: The Perilous Journey of Americans in China During WWII. The riveting story follows three recent college graduates who went to war-torn China as neutral Americans in the summer of 1941 to teach the English language to middle-school students. The United States entry into the war turned all of that upside down. One of the young teachers was recruited to drive supplies through the combat zone known as the Burma Road\, and another joined the senior staff of Texan Claire Chennault's vaunted Flying Tigers. It is an up-close and personal story of Americans helping the free Chinese battle the Japanese Empire. The Seth McMeans Lecture Series is free to all BHM members and only $5 for all others.\n\n\n\nIf you would like a boxed lunch\, provided by Must Be Heaven\, to enjoy during the Seth McMeans Lecture Series you have until noon Friday\, March 25\, 2022 to call us with your order. Boxed lunches are $10/each and contain a sandwich\, chips & cookie.
