Celebrate! A View of Juneteenth Traditions and Customs
Celebrate! A View of Juneteenth Traditions and Customs opens on Saturday, June 11 at the Brenham Heritage Museum?s Bus Depot Gallery. This new exhibit focuses on the wide variety of ways that Juneteenth has been celebrated in Washington County since the emancipation of enslaved Africans in Texas in June 1865. Specific topics include parades, coronations, rodeos, concerts and entertainment, picnics, sporting events, and reunions. Visitors can learn a great deal about the history of this holiday through artifacts, images and historic newspaper articles. Some attire belonging to past royalty at Juneteenth celebrations has been loaned for the exhibit, and a few pieces will be displayed from BHM?s permanent collection.
