Brenham State Supporting Living Center Joins Broad Effort to Observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Brenham, Texas - October 1, 2013
Brenham State Supported Living Center today announced its participation in National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities.
Throughout the month Brenham State Supported Living Center will be engaging in a variety of activities to educate the community on disability employment issues and the role they play in fostering a disability-friendly work culture. These efforts include a proclamation from Mayor Milton Tate of the City of Brenham recognizing October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month. A highlight will be an open house held at Brenham Production Services, 2910 Handley Street, Wednesday, October 9, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Brenham State Supported Work Center is an off-site work center.
The public is invited to attend this event where they can observe jobs performed by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program has been and continues to be very successful because of employers in Brenham and surrounding areas who contract with Brenham State Supported Living Center. Some of the jobs include shredding, packaging, assembly work, recycling and ground maintenance for companies including Blue Bell Creameries, Brenham Wholesale, Sealy Mattress, Valmont, City of Brenham Parks Department and other local and out of town companies.
Brenham State Supported Living Center is proud to be a part of this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month," said Michael Doebler, Vocational Coordinator at Brenham Production Services. "We want to spread the important message that a strong workforce is one inclusive of the skills and talents of all individuals, including individuals with disabilities."
