Juneteenth, formed by combining “June” and “19^th”, celebrates the day that news of freedom from slavery reached Texas on June 19, 1865.  Juneteenth honors hope and freedom.
 
The Brenham Heritage Museum invites you to observe this holiday by bringing friends and family to the museum to reflect on the past and look to the future.
Learn about the African American Buffalo Soldiers who served as cavalry and infantry troops, freedom colonies where African American families settled to build their new lives in Washington County, and the transition from “brush arbor” churches to buildings following Emancipation.
 
The exhibit is entitled, “Life After Reconstruction: Freedom on the Horizon” and features African American stories from Washington County including experiences in agriculture, education, finding work, military presence, politics, and religion in the post-Civil war era.
The exhibit is available for viewing through July 31, 2021 at the Bus Depot Gallery on Saturdays, from 10 am to 4 pm, or by appointment.  Call for more information or to book an appointment for your class, church, organization, or group.
