Seth McMeans Lecture Series: James Harkins

James Harkins is the Director of Public Services for the Texas General Land Office Archives and Records Program. With undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Texas State University in San Marcos, and professional credentials such as Certified Archivist, James is well qualified for his management position, but the passion that drives his work at GLO is the history. He has worked for the Land Office since May of 2005, and manages the Save Texas History program. That name, of course, represents much of what the GLO has become. The state’s oldest agency, established by the Republic of Texas in 1836, has a collection of 36 million documents. Preserved within that number is one of the most unique collections in the nation — over 45,000 maps, sketches, and drawings documenting the surveying and mapping of Texas boundaries and land ownership dating back to the 16th century.
The lecture is free to all BHM members and only $5 for all others.
