Winedale’s next virtual Lunch and Learn: “The Forty-Eighters on Possum Creek: A Texas Civil War Story” virtual presentation
Dr. James Kearney of the University of Texas will discuss his translation of W.A. Trenckmann’s Civil War/Home Front novel about the educated Germans who settled at Millheim in Austin County. The German settlers at Millheim were by and large pro-Union and anti-slavery, which led to great stresses during the war. Framed as a coming of age story of a young man who is faced with the draft in the waning months of the war, Kuno Sartorius, the young hero, is torn between his beloved teacher, who extracts from him the promise that he will not put on the uniform of the Confederacy, and his father (and girlfriend) who both believe it is his duty to fight for the Confederacy.
