Job Summary
The Texas Firex Hydrostatic Technician I is responsible for the hydrostatic pressure testing of cylinder vessels in accordance with DOT and FAA regulations.
 
 
Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role: (other duties may be assigned) Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Reads and interprets Component Maintenance Manuals (CMMs), procedures, and other technical materials to determine required testing methods and tools.
  • Performs visual inspections of cylinder interiors and exteriors before testing.
  • Performs hydrostatic testing per CMM specifications and DOT procedures.
  • Operates manual and automatic hydrostatic retest equipment.
  • Observes and records test pressure and expansion readings.
  • Monitors fire extinguishers and cylinders for leaks during testing.
  • Determines whether cylinders pass or fail against permanent-expansion limits, and condemns cylinders that fail.
  • Marks requalified cylinders with the Requalifier Identification Number (RIN) and test date.
  • Performs required daily calibration of test equipment, and interprets calibration results to confirm equipment is within tolerance.
  • Documents test results and maintenance performed, and maintains requalification records per 49 CFR 180.215.
  • Cleans and dries cylinder interiors.
  • Maintains an acceptable level of productivity as set by department requirements.
  • Follows all safety rules and policies, including PPE requirements.
  • Keeps the work area organized and clean.
 
 
Requirements
  • Ability to successfully complete HRD-provided DOT hazmat and Halon training.
  • Ability to wear PPE when required.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 50 lb.
  • Availability to work a 40-hour week, plus overtime as needed.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • This is a DOT safety-sensitive position. Must pass a DOT pre-employment drug test and take part in random drug and alcohol testing, as required by DOT regulations.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with cylinder test standards under 49 CFR DOT regulations and special permits.
  • Experience with Document Control.
  • Prior experience with hydrostatic testing, fire extinguishers, or aviation maintenance.
 
Experience
  • 1+ year of experience working in a shop environment.
 
Skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including CMMs, procedure manuals, and safety rules.
  • Ability to read pressure gauges and test equipment displays accurately.
  • Operation of manual and automatic hydrostatic retest equipment.
  • Basic math skills, including reading measurements and calculating pass/fail results.
  • Accurate record-keeping and documentation of test results.
  • Proficient PC use for data entry and test records.
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in following written procedures.
  • Safe handling of pressurized cylinders and shop equipment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
 
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
 
Other Circumstances
(training required)
 
  • DOT hazmat training provided by HRD.
  • Halon training provided by HRD.

Physical Demands The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; the employee will intermittently sit; frequently use hands to handle, grasp, squeeze or feel; reach with hands and arms; normal visual range with or without correction; hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; and use close vision for reading gauges and fine detail.  Frequently lift up to 50 lb.
 
  Work Environment
Work is performed in a repair shop near high-pressure test equipment, water, and noise, possible exposure to extinguishing agents.  PPE when required.
